Electric and gas water heaters

BASICALLY, THERE ARE TWO TYPES of water heaters: electric water heaters and gas water heaters. How they work is so simple that we can sum it up in one paragraph:
A water heater, whether electric or gas, has two main parts: a tank that holds water, and a heating source. Water enters the tank through a pipe called a dip tube. The dip tube directs the water flow almost to the bottom of the tank. Electric heating elements or a gas-fired burner heat the water. Hot water rises to the top of the tank where it enters a pipe that directs it to the various hot-water faucets in the home. That’s it.
The water heater, once a reservoir on the kitchen stove has evolved into an efficient, self-contained appliance. A typical water heaters, like the gas-fired unit at right, routinely heats about 100 gallons of water each day to as much as 150° to provide for an average family’s cleaning, laundering and bathing. If the water heaters is overdrawn by heavy demand it can provide a new supply of hot water within minutes. Water heaters do their work automatically with the aid of ingenious controls. These controls range in complexity from the thermocouple, which converts heat into electricity for an electromagnetic safety valve (opposite), to the “sacrificial” anode, a rod suspended inside the tank (right), the rod is made of magnesium, which enters chemical reactions more readily than steel, and it serves simply to be eaten away by corrosion that otherwise would attack exposed metal of the tank.

When a hot water faucet is turned on hot water is forced up in the heater into the hot-water outlet as Cold water enters and flows down through the dip tube. The thermostat reacts to the resulting temperature drop by opening a valve that sends gas to the burner, where it is ignited by the pilot light, as shown here, or by an electric ignition spark. Hot gases (arrows) are then vented through the flue and its heat-retaining baffle to the draft hood and vent pipe. A relief valve vents excessive pressure through the discharge pipe the anode and the glass lining will prevent corrosion of the tank walls.
